Is Rantac banned in India?

Rantac is JB Chemicals' ranitidine brand, sold as 150 mg and 300 mg tablets and as Rantac-D with domperidone. It is not banned in India.

The question is about the molecule. Ranitidine can form NDMA, a probable carcinogen, as it ages, and the drug was withdrawn in the United States and the European Union in 2020. India chose to test rather than withdraw. The Central Drugs Laboratory found half of the sampled products above the NDMA threshold, the drug was removed from the National List of Essential Medicines in 2022, and in April 2025 the Drugs Technical Advisory Board considered a ban and deferred it, asking the Indian Council of Medical Research to study the impurity under Indian storage conditions. As of 19 September 2026 that study has not led to a notification, and ranitidine products remain licensed.

Rantac itself has not, in the 2024 to 2026 alerts we have reviewed, been named as not of standard quality or spurious. A ranitidine oral solution from another manufacturer appeared in the June 2026 alert; that finding is batch-specific.

Anyone taking Rantac daily has a reasonable question for their doctor about whether famotidine or a proton-pump inhibitor would be a better long-term choice. That is a clinical judgement, not a regulatory requirement, and the medicine should not be dropped abruptly on the strength of a headline.
