Is Disprin banned in India?

Disprin is a soluble aspirin tablet and one of the oldest painkiller brands in India. Aspirin is also used in low doses to prevent heart attacks and strokes under brands such as Ecosprin. None of this is banned.

The trigger for the question was the Health Ministry's notification of 11 June 2026 prohibiting 16 fixed-dose combinations. The first entry, S.O. 3068(E), is acetylsalicylic acid with ethoheptazine, an old analgesic pairing that had little modern use. Because "acetylsalicylic acid" is the chemical name for aspirin, summaries of the list read "aspirin combination banned" and then, in shorter form, "aspirin banned". The order applies only to that combination.

Single-ingredient aspirin has never been notified under Section 26A. It appears in the National List of Essential Medicines for cardiovascular use, and Disprin, Ecosprin and their generics are licensed.

A separate point often folded into the question: doctors avoid aspirin in children and teenagers with viral illnesses because of the risk of Reye's syndrome. That is a prescribing caution found in the product label, not a regulatory prohibition.

If you take aspirin daily on a doctor's advice, the June 2026 order changes nothing. If you have an old pain tablet whose label mentions ethoheptazine, ask your pharmacist about disposal.
