Is Aciloc banned in India?

Aciloc is Cadila Pharmaceuticals' ranitidine brand, one of the three names most Indians associate with acidity tablets. It is not banned.

Ranitidine's problem is NDMA, a probable carcinogen that forms as the molecule degrades, particularly in heat. After the United States and European Union withdrew ranitidine in 2020, India tested products through the Central Drugs Laboratory, found that about half the samples exceeded the NDMA threshold, and removed the drug from the National List of Essential Medicines in 2022. In April 2025 the Drugs Technical Advisory Board took up a proposal to ban it and deferred the decision, asking the Indian Council of Medical Research to study NDMA formation in Indian conditions. As of 19 September 2026 there is no Section 26A notification, and Aciloc, Rantac and other ranitidine products are licensed and sold.

Aciloc RD, which combines ranitidine with domperidone, is in the same position. It is not among the domperidone combinations banned in 2024 or halted in 2025.

If you take Aciloc every day for reflux, the useful conversation with your doctor is about alternatives, famotidine or a proton-pump inhibitor, rather than about a ban. Occasional use is a smaller question. In either case the medicine should not be stopped abruptly on the strength of a rumour, and any batch-level alert should be checked against the number on your strip.
