Where the claim comes from

The rumour started in July 2015, weeks after the Maggi withdrawal, when reports that the US FDA had refused Haldiram's shipments as 'filthy' produced 'After Maggi, Haldiram?' headlines. Chain messages since 2020 add a false claim that the bhujia contains marble dust from Makrana. A separate communal rumour in 2022 said the company had been sold to a Muslim buyer. In February 2026 raids on a Lucknow distributor storage and a complaint about a Hyderabad outlet revived 'Haldiram banned' posts.

Haldiram's has never been banned in India and is not under any FSSAI order today. The 'ban' in the rumour is American, and it is not a ban there either.

Between September 2014 and early 2018 the US FDA refused Haldiram's shipments 86 times, most often labelling products such as cookies, wafers and biscuits 'filthy, putrid or decomposed' or flagging pesticide residues. On 6 Jul 2017 it sent Haldiram Snacks in Noida a warning letter about process records for canned Dal Makhni and Rajma Raseela. Import refusals apply to the consignments inspected; they do not remove a brand from the US market, and Haldiram's products continue to be sold there. Haldiram's said its products comply with Indian law and that some pesticides permitted in India are not permitted in the US.

When the refusals made news in July 2015, Maharashtra ordered its FDA to test Haldiram's products. In August 2015 the FDA commissioner said 35 samples from Nagpur and Mumbai, including bhujia, sev, moong dal and soan papdi, showed no contamination, with lead between 0.8 and 1.73 ppm against the Indian limit of 2.25 ppm, and that the products were safe.

Later rumours added invention. A 2020 message claimed the bhujia was crisped with marble dust from Makrana; FSSAI's then chief executive called the claim bogus. A 2022 message said the company had been sold to a Muslim buyer; Alt News found no basis for it. In February 2026 Uttar Pradesh food safety officers destroyed about 112 kg of expired sonpapdi and rajbhog at a Lucknow storage run by a distributor, and customers at a Hyderabad outlet complained of expired and unlabelled packs. Both are enforcement against stock past its date, not findings against the brand.

Haldiram's is not banned, not recalled and not under notice in India as of 20 Sep 2026.
