Where the claim comes from
Dairy Milk rumours come from two real events retold without their endings. In October 2003 Maharashtra's FDA found worms in Dairy Milk bars in Mumbai just before Diwali, a story that still circulates with its photographs. In May 2014 Malaysia's health ministry found pork DNA in two Cadbury Dairy Milk samples and the company recalled them; the clearance a week later is rarely shared. 'Banned chocolate in India' listicles fold both into a claim that Dairy Milk is banned.
Cadbury Dairy Milk has never been banned in India and is not under any FSSAI order today. The two events behind the rumour both happened, and both ended without a ban.
In October 2003 a Mumbai shopkeeper found insects in a Dairy Milk bar. On 6 Oct 2003 Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration confirmed two dead and one live insect in a sample, seized stock from Cadbury's Talegaon plant and held a press conference. Cadbury did not contest the findings. It spent over Rs 15 crore replacing its foil-and-paper wrapping with heat-sealed poly-flow packs and absorbed the extra cost. No order banned or recalled the chocolate; the fix was packaging that stops insects getting in during storage.
In May 2014 Malaysia's health ministry, running routine halal checks, found pork DNA in two of three samples of Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Roast Almond. Cadbury Malaysia recalled both products nationwide and reviewed its supply chain. On 2 Jun 2014 the Malaysian Islamic Development Department, JAKIM, said 11 samples taken from the factory and tested at an accredited laboratory contained no pig DNA, and the products were cleared. The episode never involved India, where Dairy Milk is made by Mondelez India and carries the green vegetarian mark.
Government actions involving Mondelez India since then concern other products: the April 2024 advisory on listing Bournvita as a 'health drink', and FSSAI's August 2026 claims and labelling notices, which named the company without naming a product. Dairy Milk is not banned, not recalled and not under notice in India as of 20 Sep 2026.
