Where the claim comes from

The Oreo rumour is a halal and vegetarian scare. A graphic shared widely on social media claims the biscuit contains 'fat and pork milk' and shows a phone number said to be the manufacturer's. Alt News traced the number to an unrelated firm that said its details had been misused. In India the Bournvita advisory of 2024 and the 2026 notices to Mondelez are sometimes added to suggest an Oreo ban.

Oreo has never been banned in India and is not under any FSSAI order today. The rumour is one recycled graphic.

The image claims that Oreo contains 'fat and pork milk' and that the manufacturer has confirmed this, and it carries a contact number. When Alt News checked in January 2023, the company whose number appeared on the graphic replied that someone had used its details without permission. Mondelez, which makes Oreo in India, said that all products made by Mondelez India Foods are of vegetarian origin and that the green dot on the wrapper confirms it. The green mark is a legal declaration under Indian labelling rules, not a marketing choice. Alt News also noted that Oreo UK's own FAQ says its biscuits are not halal-certified but contain nothing that makes them unsuitable, apart from a few flavoured varieties.

Real government actions involving Mondelez India concern other products. In April 2024 the commerce ministry told e-commerce platforms to stop listing Bournvita as a 'health drink', a categorisation advisory that did not restrict sale. On 22 Aug 2026 FSSAI named Mondelez India among more than 150 companies notified over misleading advertisements and labelling, without naming a product. Neither touches Oreo.

Indian law requires the vegetarian symbol to be accurate. Oreo sold in India carries it, and Mondelez says every product it makes in India is vegetarian.

Mondelez India has received an advisory on Bournvita and a claims notice in 2026. Neither says anything about Oreo.
