Where the claim comes from
The claim dates from April 2024, when the Ministry of Commerce's advisory to e-commerce platforms to remove Bournvita from the 'health drinks' category was widely headlined as a ban. It followed a 2023 social-media controversy over the product's sugar content and an NCPCR inquiry.
Bournvita is not banned. In April 2024 two government advisories addressed how online stores categorised it. FSSAI told e-commerce food business operators on 2 Apr 2024 that 'health drink' and 'energy drink' are not defined in the Food Safety and Standards Act or regulations and that products should be listed under the categories that do exist. On 10 Apr 2024 the Ministry of Commerce and Industry advised platforms to remove Bournvita and similar beverages from the 'health drinks' category.
That is the extent of the action. There was no prohibition, no recall, no reformulation order and no restriction on where or to whom the product could be sold. Mondelez India was not fined or notified under the claims regulations in the sources held here.
The searches persist because the advisory was reported as a ban and because the underlying sugar debate continues. The regulatory answer is straightforward: Bournvita is on sale and nothing about its sale is restricted.
