Carrageenan is a gelling and thickening agent extracted from red seaweed and permitted in India as additive INS 407. Because seaweed accumulates heavy metals from seawater, cadmium is a recognised contaminant of concern in the ingredient. On 13 Sep 2026, 365Telugu reported that FSSAI had ordered a recall of carrageenan produced by Aquagri Processing Co. after testing found cadmium above the permitted limit, in the same set of orders as the Shalimar's Chef coriander powder recall.
The report is the only source located. The FSSAI order, with its number, the batches covered and the cadmium level found, has not been retrieved, and no information has been published on which finished foods used the affected lots. Until the order is confirmed this entry is provisional.
Aquagri is a seaweed-processing company supplying carrageenan to food manufacturers; the recall therefore sits upstream of retail. If the batch list is published, manufacturers rather than consumers are the parties expected to act on it.
