The Bureau of Indian Standards published a public alert for a recall of skimmed milk powder sold under the Aavin Madurai brand, manufactured by Madurai District Co-op Milk Producers Union Ltd, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, under BIS licence CM/L 501931 for IS 13334 (Part 1):2014. The order is dated 14 Dec 2022. The order names the non-conforming parameter as Spore count, aerobic (Bacillus cereus) (clause 5.6 of the standard). The alert covers lot 258, manufacturing date 15-09-2022.
BIS issues such alerts when a sample drawn under its certification scheme fails one or more requirements of the Indian Standard, and it directs the licensee to withdraw the affected lot and inform the public.
A BIS recall is separate from FSSAI's recall system. It does not, on its own, indicate an FSSAI licence suspension or prohibition, and it applies only to the lot named in the order.

What a BIS recall is
BIS certifies products against Indian Standards under the ISI mark. When a factory or market sample fails the standard, BIS directs the licensee to recall the affected lot and publishes a public alert.
Spore counts in milk powder
IS 13334 sets microbiological limits including spore-forming bacteria such as Bacillus cereus and sulfite-reducing Clostridia. Powder that fails them can spoil or cause food poisoning once reconstituted, especially if kept warm.

It is not an FSSAI action
BIS recalls run under the BIS Act, 2016, separately from FSSAI's FoSCoS recall system. A BIS alert does not by itself mean an FSSAI licence action.
