Maharashtra FDA suspends licence of McDonald's Colaba outlet (Aug 2026)

On 19 Aug 2026 the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration suspended the food licence of the McDonald's outlet at Metro House in Colaba, south Mumbai. The outlet is run by Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt Ltd, the McDonald's franchisee for west and south India. The FDA had earlier served an improvement notice listing 20 deficiencies; on re-inspection 18 were still unresolved.

The findings reported by Business Standard and Business Today included uncalibrated refrigeration, live cockroaches and no pest traps, rotting food waste, dirty cleaning cloths, employees handling ready-to-eat food without proper hand washing, and the use of processed cheese sauce despite claims about real cheese.

The same round of inspections under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe's 'Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra' drive covered 89 establishments, produced 71 improvement notices and suspended 13 licences. The other suspensions that day included the Bombay Presidency Radio Club, Status Restaurant at Nariman Point, Khar Gymkhana, Novaara in Malad, Bajrang Sweet Mart in Santacruz West and ASM Hotels in Andheri West, plus establishments in Nagpur, Nashik, Amravati, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Parbhani.

A suspension attaches to the premises. It does not affect other McDonald's outlets, and there was no product recall. Hardcastle's response and the reopening date are not recorded in the sources held here.
