Protinex, Danone India's long-established protein supplement, was tested in both rounds of the Citizens Protein Project, the crowdfunded studies published in the journal Medicine. The first, in April 2024, reported a shortfall between labelled and measured protein. The second, published 14 Nov 2025, measured 38.1 g protein per 100 g and reported total aflatoxin of 14.13 µg/kg, the highest of the 34 products tested and just below FSSAI's 15 µg/kg limit. It also recorded cadmium at 0.1 mg/kg, fructose of about 3.4 g per 100 g not declared on the label and taurine at 6.76 g per 100 g. The study's units are to be checked against the paper before publication.
These are published research findings, not regulatory ones. FSSAI has not issued a recall, prohibition or notice against Protinex that is on record, and no Danone rebuttal has been located in the sources held here.
Protinex is often bought on medical advice for older adults and patients. The findings are relevant to that group, but the numbers do not show a breach of Indian limits.
What this means for you
Detected, not over the limit
The aflatoxin figure sits just under FSSAI's 15 µg/kg limit. It is the highest in the study, which is why it is flagged, but it is not a legal violation on the study's numbers.
