Coca-Cola India (Coke, Thums Up, Sprite, Maaza): FSSAI record

Coca-Cola India sells Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Sprite, Maaza, Limca, Kinley and Minute Maid through bottlers, the largest of which is Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages. Its regulatory record for 2024 to 2026 contains no recall and no ban. It contains one notice and one old court case.

The notice came in August 2026. On 22 Aug 2026 FSSAI said it had issued more than 150 notices in recent weeks for misleading advertisements, false claims and labelling non-compliance, and named Coca-Cola India alongside Nestlé India, PepsiCo, Red Bull India, Mondelez India and others. FSSAI did not say which Coca-Cola product or claim was involved, and no product was ordered off shelves. Separately, on 2 Jul 2026 FSSAI notified six companies, including Monster Energy India, for using the term 'energy drink' and making functional claims; that action is recorded on the Monster page.

The court case is older. On 12 Dec 2024 the Bombay High Court refused to quash proceedings against Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages arising from a 2001 sample of Canada Dry drawn by the Jalna FDA, which alleged fibrous matter and cobwebs inside sealed bottles. The case continues; it is a prosecution, not a product action.

The event most people remember is the pesticide episode. In August 2003 the Centre for Science and Environment reported pesticide residues in Coca-Cola and PepsiCo drinks sold in Delhi. A Joint Parliamentary Committee in 2004 supported the findings and asked for residue-free aerated water. In August 2006 CSE tested 57 samples of 11 brands from 12 states and again reported residues far above the draft BIS limit. Kerala banned both companies' products on 10 to 11 Aug 2006 and six other states barred them from schools, colleges and hospitals. The Kerala High Court quashed the state ban on 22 Sep 2006, holding that a state had no power under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act to impose it. The Union health ministry said there was no conclusive proof of contamination. On 22 Oct 2013 the Supreme Court, hearing a public interest petition filed in 2004, declined to ban soft drinks and directed FSSAI to conduct periodic checks of carbonated drinks.

Coca-Cola India is not banned, not recalled and not under any sale restriction in India as of 20 Sep 2026.
