Is Avil banned in India?

Avil is Sanofi's brand of pheniramine maleate, a first-generation antihistamine sold as a 25 mg tablet and as an injection widely used in emergency rooms for allergic reactions. It is not banned in India.

Pheniramine has never been named in a Section 26A notification. It is not in the CDSCO's list of banned single-ingredient drugs, which does include two other old antihistamines, astemizole and terfenadine, withdrawn for heart-rhythm effects. It is not in the FDC waves of 2016, 2018, 2023, 2024 or 2026, all of which concern combinations; pheniramine combinations were not among them. And it has nothing to do with the 2025 to 2026 restriction on chlorpheniramine + phenylephrine products for children under four, which is about a different antihistamine.

The likeliest explanation for the question is that antihistamines as a class have been in regulatory news for a decade, and Avil is the brand many people can name. Its injection is also in constant use for drug reactions and insect bites, so any rumour spreads quickly through hospital corridors.

Avil is a prescription medicine with the usual first-generation antihistamine effects: drowsiness, dry mouth and, in older adults, confusion. Those are reasons for care in use, not evidence of a ban. If a monthly CDSCO alert ever names an Avil batch, compare the batch number on your strip; such findings are batch-specific.
