Where the claim comes from
'Is Augmentin banned' tracks two stories: the recurring amoxiclav batches in CDSCO monthly alerts since 2024, and the June 2026 ban on amoxicillin + serratiopeptidase, which was widely reported as 'amoxicillin combinations banned'. Augmentin is the reference brand for amoxiclav, so it collects the question.
Augmentin is GSK's original brand of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, and it is not banned in India.
Amoxicillin + clavulanate is on the National List of Essential Medicines, is made by dozens of companies and has never been named in a Section 26A notification. The FDC bans that involve amoxicillin are different combinations: amoxicillin + dicloxacillin + lactobacillus in the August 2024 list, and amoxicillin + serratiopeptidase, with or without lactobacillus, and amoxicillin + cloxacillin + lactic acid bacillus + serratiopeptidase in the June 2026 list. The ministry's ground in each case was that adding an enzyme or a probiotic to an antibiotic has no therapeutic justification.
The other source of the question is the CDSCO's monthly alerts, in which amoxiclav appears often because it is so widely made. The August 2024 alert flagged a Clavam 625 batch that Alkem said was counterfeit; the February 2026 alert declared an amoxyclav batch spurious; the May 2026 alert listed NSQ amoxiclav batches from Sun Pharma, Medreich and Alkem and a spurious one from Apex Formulation. None of the reports we have seen names Augmentin. Any such finding, when it occurs, applies to the batch and manufacturer stated.
For patients the advice is unchanged: finish the prescribed course, buy from a licensed pharmacy, and check a batch number against the alerts if a report worries you.
