Is Calpol banned in India?

Calpol is a paracetamol brand sold as tablets and as a paediatric syrup. It is not banned in India, and no regulator has proposed banning it.

The government's recent actions on children's medicines are the reason for the question. On 4 October 2025 the Directorate General of Health Services advised that cough syrups should not be prescribed or dispensed to children below two years, after the deaths linked to diethylene-glycol-contaminated syrups. In April 2025 and again in August 2026 the Health Ministry required chlorpheniramine + phenylephrine products to carry a "not for children below four years" label. Both measures concern cough and cold products. Paracetamol syrup is a fever and pain medicine and is outside both.

Single-ingredient paracetamol has never been the subject of a Section 26A notification. The various FDC bans since 2016 removed combinations in which paracetamol is mixed with decongestants, antihistamines, muscle relaxants or opioids; they did not touch paracetamol alone.

What parents should still do is ordinary: dose by weight as advised, keep to the interval on the label, and check the batch number if a CDSCO alert names a paracetamol product. Batch-level findings, when they occur, are about one production lot, not the brand.
