Nutrabox Whey Protein was product 3 of 36 in the first Citizens Protein Project, a self-funded study published in Medicine in April 2024. The study bought the products in 2023, coded and blinded them, and had an FSSAI-approved laboratory in Kochi run total protein (Kjeldahl), aflatoxin, pesticide residue, heavy metals and steroid screens. The label figure comes from the study's master chart (Supplementary Document 1) and Figure S1; the measured figures are from Table 1 of the paper. The laboratory found 58.17 g protein per 100 g against 72.70 g claimed, 14.5 points or 20% short, the third-largest gap in the study after the two BigMuscles products and B-Protin. No aflatoxin, pesticide, arsenic, cadmium or lead was detected; copper was 1.51 mg/kg. Trustified separately lists several Nutrabox products as PASS on later batches.
The study reports differences as percentage points of protein per 100 g. It tested one batch of each product and did not compare metal readings with FSSAI limits. No FSSAI action on this product is on record.
What this means for you
A label gap, not a safety finding
The laboratory found 14.5 points (20%) below the label. Nothing in the contaminant panels breached a stated limit. The concern is the accuracy of the protein number on the pack.
Trace metals were reported without a limit check
The laboratory reported none above limit of quantification and copper 1.51 mg/kg. The paper did not compare these with FSSAI limits for foods, so a detection here is a data point, not a finding of violation.
One batch, one study
This is independent, self-funded laboratory work on a single batch bought in 2023. It is not an FSSAI finding and FSSAI has taken no action on this product.
