Is Dolo 650 banned in India?

Dolo 650 became India's default fever tablet during the pandemic, and it is one of the most searched medicine names in the country. It is not banned, and it has never been the subject of a Section 26A notification.

Paracetamol as a single ingredient is on the National List of Essential Medicines and is sold by hundreds of manufacturers. What the government has banned, in several rounds since 2016, are fixed-dose combinations where paracetamol is mixed with two or more other drugs, cold tablets with phenylpropanolamine, pain tablets with tramadol and caffeine, and similar. None of those orders touches a plain paracetamol tablet.

The Dolo rumour has its own history. In July 2022 income-tax searches on Micro Labs, the Bengaluru company that makes Dolo, were reported alongside allegations about marketing expenses. That was a tax matter and led to no action on the product's licence. In August 2024 the 156-FDC list, which contains many paracetamol combinations, was read by some as a paracetamol ban.
