Where the claim comes from
Three stories feed 'Lay's banned' searches. The oldest is a 2015 chain message claiming the flavour enhancer E631 in Lay's is pig fat, which spread in India and Pakistan. The second is the December 2024 US recall of Lay's Classic for undeclared milk, which became 'Lay's recalled' headlines in January 2025 when the US FDA rated it Class I. The third is FSSAI's July and August 2026 notices to PepsiCo, which concern energy drinks and unnamed claims, not chips.
Lay's has never been banned in India and is not under any FSSAI order today. The rumours behind the question are each traceable to something real that has been stretched.
The E631 claim comes from a 2015 message that said the additive listed on Lay's packs is pig fat. E631, disodium inosinate, is a flavour enhancer that can be produced from meat, fish or plant starch. PepsiCo said then, and its packs still say, that the Indian products are vegetarian and carry the green mark, which under Indian labelling rules must be accurate. No regulator has found otherwise.
The recall claim comes from the United States. On 16 Dec 2024 Frito-Lay recalled a limited number of 13 oz Lay's Classic bags sold in Oregon and Washington because they might contain undeclared milk, a risk for people with milk allergy. In late January 2025 the US FDA classified the recall as Class I, its most serious category, which produced a wave of headlines. The bags were made and sold in the US; no Indian stock was involved and no Indian authority acted.
The 2026 notices concern PepsiCo, not Lay's. On 2 Jul 2026 FSSAI notified PepsiCo over 'energy drink' claims on Sting and Adrenaline Rush, and on 22 Aug 2026 it named PepsiCo among more than 150 companies notified over misleading ads and labelling, without naming a product. Neither is a ban and neither mentions chips.
Lay's is not banned, not recalled and not under notice in India as of 20 Sep 2026.

Buy and eat as usual
There is no regulatory restriction on Lay's in India. Whether it is a healthy snack is a separate question from whether it is banned.
Foreign recall headlines are not Indian news
The bags recalled in the US were made and sold there. Lay's sold in India comes from PepsiCo's Indian plants.
Read the green mark
Indian packs carry the vegetarian symbol, which the law requires to be truthful. E631 can be made from plant sources, and PepsiCo says its version is.
