Is Spasmo-Proxyvon banned in India?

Spasmo-Proxyvon was for decades one of India's most prescribed, and most misused, painkillers. Its original formula combined dicyclomine, paracetamol and dextropropoxyphene, a weak opioid. Dextropropoxyphene had already been withdrawn in the United States and the European Union because of heart-rhythm toxicity in overdose.

On 23 May 2013 the Health Ministry prohibited dextropropoxyphene and all its formulations under GSR 332(E), acting under Section 26A. Wockhardt withdrew the original Spasmo-Proxyvon and later launched Spasmo-Proxyvon Plus, in which tramadol replaces dextropropoxyphene. That product is legal, but since April 2018 tramadol has been a controlled substance under the NDPS Act, so it is sold only on prescription with record-keeping.

There is one point of doubt. The Vibcare status table shows the dextropropoxyphene prohibition as "revoked with conditions" under GSR 367(E) of 13 April 2017. We have not found that revocation in any other source, and the general understanding in the trade is that the 2013 ban stands. Until the Gazette text is checked, this page treats dextropropoxyphene as banned and flags the conflict.
