Where the claim comes from

Independent lab findings on individual products and regulator notices about claims can be read as a 'ban'. Neither is a ban on whey.

Whey protein is not banned in India. FSSAI's health supplement and nutraceutical regulations of 2022, put into operation by its direction of 30 Mar 2022, list protein isolates and concentrates among their permitted ingredients. We found no order that bans whey protein or protein powder as a category.

What does exist is a body of independent testing. This site holds 188 protein-powder lab results from independent testers, set out product by product at /food/supplements/protein-powders. Those are findings about individual products, not regulator bans.

Do not confuse them with regulator notices about claims. In October 2026, FSSAI show-cause notices were reported to several companies over protein-related claims. Those notices are at an early stage and say nothing about whey being banned. As of 10 Oct 2026 the 2022 regulations still work through FSSAI directions; no final gazette notification was found in 2025 or 2026.

What this means for you

Whey is lawful; individual tubs are the question

Whether a particular product matches its label is a question for a laboratory. Independent lab results for 188 protein powders are on the protein powders page of this site.

A notice about claims is not a ban

The October 2026 show-cause notices concern claims on protein products. They are at an early stage, with no finding.

This is a record of official orders, not medical advice. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without asking your doctor or pharmacist.
