Key facts
- Company
- M/s SDP Industries Private Limited, Ringanwada, Daman
- Brands named
- Shraddha, Shree Saras and Gokul, among others
- What is prohibited
- Sale of all variants of ghee manufactured, stored or sold from the authorised premises, regardless of brand, product name, type, batch or lot
- Why
- Samples drawn on 19 May 2026 failed; the Referral Food Laboratory confirmed in Aug 2026 that beta-sitosterol was present (it should be absent from ghee) and the fatty acid composition did not conform, pointing to foreign or vegetable fat
- Earlier record
- Adjudication penalty for sub-standard ghee on 18 Aug 2023; a fine under Section 64 of the FSS Act on 14 Oct 2025; samples in 2024 and Jan 2026 also did not conform
- Duration
- With immediate effect and until further orders
On 21 Aug 2026 the Press Information Bureau announced that FSSAI, acting through its Designated Officer (Central Licensing Authority), had prohibited the sale of all variants of ghee manufactured, stored or sold by M/s SDP Industries Private Limited of Ringanwada, Daman, from its authorised premises. The order was made under Section 36(3)(b) of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and applies with immediate effect and until further orders, regardless of brand, product name, type, batch or lot. The brands named in the release are Shraddha, Shree Saras and Gokul.
The order followed an enforcement inspection and sampling on 19 May 2026 at which several samples failed. The samples were sent to the Referral Food Laboratory, whose reports, received in August 2026, confirmed the non-conformity. The laboratory detected beta-sitosterol, a plant sterol that the ghee standard requires to be absent, and found the fatty acid composition outside the standard, both of which point to foreign or vegetable fat. Earlier samples in 2024 and January 2026 had also failed on parameters including the Butyro-refractometer reading, Reichert-Meissl value, saponification value and Polenske value.
The company had a prior record with the regulator. An adjudication order of 18 Aug 2023 imposed a penalty in a sub-standard ghee case, and a fine followed on 14 Oct 2025 for a further offence under Section 64 of the FSS Act. The release does not state the date of the prohibition order itself, name the laboratories or give the licence number, and it carries no instruction to state food safety commissioners or to online platforms.
This is an order against one manufacturer. It is not a ban on ghee, on any brand made elsewhere, or on other companies that use the Gokul name. We will update the status if FSSAI lifts or modifies the order.
What this means for you
This is a manufacturer order, not a ghee ban
The prohibition names one company's premises in Daman and every ghee it makes under any brand. Ghee from other manufacturers is not covered.
Check the manufacturer on the pack
The brands named are Shraddha, Shree Saras and Gokul, but the order also covers any other label from the same premises. The manufacturer's name and address on the back of the pack is what matters. Note that Gokul is also a brand name used by other dairies; this order is about ghee made by SDP Industries.
What the tests found
Beta-sitosterol is a plant sterol. The ghee standard requires it to be absent, so its presence, together with a fatty acid profile outside the standard, is read as a sign of vegetable fat in the product.
This is a record of official orders, not medical advice. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without asking your doctor or pharmacist.
