N°4/2023: Substandard (contaminated) syrup medicines: Guaifenesin Syrup TG, Marshall Islands and Micronesia

On 25 April 2023 the WHO warned of a batch of Guaifenesin Syrup TG, an expectorant, identified in the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia and found by laboratory analysis to contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The stated manufacturer was QP Pharmachem of Punjab, India, and the marketer Trillium Pharma of Haryana, India. Neither company had provided the WHO with guarantees of the product's safety and quality at the time of the alert. No adverse events were reported in the alert.
