Where the claim comes from
Liv-52 is the best-known Ayurvedic brand in India, and 'is Liv-52 banned' rises whenever Ayurvedic products are in the news, misleading-advertisement cases against Patanjali, state action on heavy metals in some herbal products, or overseas import alerts. None of those cases involved Liv-52.
Liv-52 is Himalaya's herbal liver formulation, sold since the 1950s as tablets, double-strength tablets and syrup. It is not banned in India.
The regulatory regime is different from the one that governs the bans this site mostly covers. Liv-52 is licensed as an Ayurvedic proprietary medicine under the Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, administered by the Ministry of AYUSH and state licensing authorities, not by the CDSCO under Section 26A. The FDC bans of 2016 to 2026 do not apply to Ayurvedic products, and we have found no order from the Ministry of AYUSH or any state authority against Liv-52.
Ayurvedic products do make regulatory news: the Supreme Court's proceedings against Patanjali over misleading advertisements, state action on heavy-metal content in some herbal formulations, and import alerts abroad for products found to contain undeclared metals or drugs. None of those cases has involved Liv-52, and the brand is sold as a supplement in the United States, Europe and elsewhere without a safety withdrawal that we have found.
The product can be used as labelled. What it cannot do is treat liver disease: anyone with jaundice, abnormal liver tests or a diagnosis of fatty liver or hepatitis needs a doctor, and a tonic is not a substitute. That is a clinical point, not a regulatory one.
