Where things stand
No product of Patanjali Ayurved or Divya Pharmacy is banned nationally. The matters below are a court case about advertising, a licence suspension that the state cancelled, a seizure under an advertising law, and a civil dispute with a rival. Each is dated and attributed to the court or authority that acted.
2022: the petition
The Indian Medical Association filed a petition in the Supreme Court, Indian Medical Association v Union of India, W.P.(C) 645/2022, over misleading advertisements. Rule 170 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, which required state authorities to pre-approve advertisements for ayurvedic, siddha and unani drugs, became part of the case.
2024
- 15 Apr 2024: the Uttarakhand State Licensing Authority (Ayurveda and Unani) suspended the manufacturing licences of 14 products of Divya Pharmacy and Patanjali Ayurved under Rule 159(1), for repeated misleading advertising. The products were Swasari Gold, Swasari Vati, Bronchom, Swasari Pravahi, Swasari Avaleh, Mukta Vati Extra Power, Lipidom, BP Grit, Madhugrit, Madhunashini Vati Extra Power, Livamrit Advance, Livogrit, Eyegrit Gold and Patanjali Drishti Eye Drop.
- 30 Apr 2024: reports said the authority had told the Supreme Court of the suspension. One headline said the licences were revoked; the body of the report said suspended.
- 1 Jul 2024: Rule 170 was omitted by the Drugs (Fourth Amendment) Rules. On the same date, according to Business Standard, the state cancelled the suspension order after a committee report, with a fresh decision pending.
- 9 Jul 2024: Patanjali told the Supreme Court that it had stopped selling the 14 products and had told 5,606 franchise stores to withdraw them.
- 30 Jul 2024: the Supreme Court (Justices Hima Kohli and Sandeep Mehta) asked Uttarakhand to decide the matter and file a report in two weeks. No later order is on public record.
- Aug 2024: contempt proceedings against Ramdev and Balkrishna over misleading advertisements were closed after apologies.
- 27 Aug 2024: the Supreme Court stayed the omission of Rule 170.
2025
- 26 Mar 2025: Justices Oka and Bhuyan directed states to appoint enforcement officers under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act and set up grievance cells, with compliance due in June 2025.
- Jun 2025: the High Court at Nainital (Uttarakhand) was reported to have quashed the criminal case over the advertisements.
- 11 Aug 2025: a Supreme Court bench of Justices Nagarathna and Viswanathan vacated its stay on the omission of Rule 170 and disposed of the petition, leaving parties free to challenge the omission separately.
- 6 Nov 2025: in Dabur India v Patanjali Ayurved (2025 SCC OnLine Del 8347), the Delhi High Court (Justice Tejas Karia) restrained Patanjali from calling all other chyawanprash "dhoka", holding at the interim stage that disparaging a whole class of products is not mere puffery. This was a dispute between two companies over advertising.
2026
- Jun 2026: Maharashtra FDA seized about Rs 51 lakh of Divya Pharmacy products (Drushti Eye Drop, Giloy Ghan Vati, Kutaj Ghan Vati, Cystogrit Diamond and Neurogrit Gold) for "miraculous cure" claims under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act. Patanjali moved the Bombay High Court, and the state told the court it would take no coercive action for the time being.
- As read on 9 Oct 2026: Maharashtra FDA's table of failed lab tests lists one Divya Pharmacy product, Arjuna Kwath, for microbial limit.
What this timeline is not
It is not a list of bans. A suspension stops manufacture of named products while it stands. A seizure removes stock. A failed test is a finding on one sample. None of the orders on record bans a Patanjali or Divya Pharmacy product nationally. For the product-by-product record, see Is Patanjali banned in India?, and for other actions see the notices page.
