Is DMAA banned in India?
Last checked 10 October 2026
No Indian instrument naming DMAA (methylhexanamine) was found as of 10 Oct 2026, but it is not in FSSAI's permitted schedules, so it is not permitted in a food supplement. It has been banned in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Brazil.

Where the claim comes from
Searches follow the bans abroad ('is dmaa banned in us'). We found no Indian order that names DMAA, which is why this page calls it not permitted rather than banned.
DMAA, also called methylhexanamine, is a stimulant that has been banned or acted against in several countries: Canada in 2011, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Brazil in 2012, and the US FDA in 2013. Searches for 'is DMAA banned' usually follow those actions.
India is different in form, not in outcome. We found no FSSAI or CDSCO instrument that names DMAA, and no CDSCO notice on it in 2025 or 2026. But FSSAI's supplement regulations of 2022 allow only the ingredients in their permitted schedules, and DMAA is not among them. A food supplement that contains it is therefore not permitted.
For that reason this page uses the word 'restricted' and does not say 'banned'. The word 'banned' would claim an order that we have not found. As of 10 Oct 2026 the 2022 regulations still work through FSSAI directions; no final gazette notification was found in 2025 or 2026.
What this means for you
Absence of a ban is not permission
Supplements in India can use only what the schedules permit. DMAA is not on them.
Check pre-workout and fat-burner labels
DMAA is listed on labels as DMAA or methylhexanamine. A product that contains it is not a lawful supplement in India.
This is a record of official orders, not medical advice. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without asking your doctor or pharmacist.
Common questions
Is DMAA banned in the US?
The US FDA took action against it in 2013, according to the summary used for this page.
Is DMAA legal in Indian supplements?
No. It is not in FSSAI's permitted schedules, so a food supplement cannot lawfully contain it.
