Is sunscreen banned in India?

Last checked 10 October 2026

Sunscreen. Status: Not banned; two batch failures in 2026.

No. Sunscreens are ordinary cosmetics in India and none has been banned; CDSCO's 2026 lab lists record two failed batches, UV ETO SPF 50+ Sunscreen Lotion (Elegant Cosmed, Rajkot) for microbial count in May 2026 and a Rice Water and Niacinamide hybrid sunscreen (Sprivil, Satara) for total fatty substance in March 2026, and no Indian rule requires an SPF claim to be tested before sale.

Key facts

Status

SPF claims
No Indian rule requires pre-market SPF testing; claims fall under Rule 36 (misleading claims) if challenged
Abroad
The 'banned sunscreen' searches usually concern Hawaii's ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate for reef protection, which does not apply in India

Where the claim comes from

Hawaii's 2021 reef-protection ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate, and 2024 to 2025 social media claims that 'chemical sunscreens' are banned.

No sunscreen is banned in India and no sunscreen ingredient in common use is prohibited here. The products are cosmetics under the Cosmetics Rules 2020, licensed by state authorities and sampled like any other. CDSCO's 2026 lab lists carry two sunscreen failures: in March a Rice Water and Niacinamide hybrid sunscreen from Sprivil, Satara, for total fatty substance, and in May a UV ETO SPF 50+ Sunscreen Lotion from Elegant Cosmed, Rajkot, for microbial count at the FDA laboratory in Mumbai. Each is one batch.

What India does not do is verify SPF. There is no pre-market test, so the number on the tube is the maker's claim, challengeable only after the fact under Rule 36 on misleading claims. The 'banned sunscreen' searches mostly trace back to Hawaii, which since 2021 bars sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect coral, and to social media posts that turned that into a general claim. India has no such rule.

What this means for you

One batch, not the brand

A failed lab test names a batch number and the lab that tested it. It does not mean every pack of that product is affected. Check the batch on your pack against the one in the record.

SPF numbers are the maker's claim

Indian regulators do not test SPF before sale. Independent tests abroad have found many products below their label; in India no such test is on an official record.

Oxybenzone is legal here

Hawaii and some island nations ban two UV filters to protect coral reefs. India has no such rule.
